‘Business’ notebooks usually conjure up images of ugly, stripped machines designed to crunch numbers on a strict budget possible – and keep tapping and after passed from executives to grunts. HP’s EliteBook series against the current trend. Stylish and powerful, but also takes up a series of reinforced components designed to abuse that would crack, warp and destroy weak consumer rigs to resist. While you pay a premium for the privilege to drive users who expect their laptops into the ground with heavy use will see repaid in any replacement notebook not buy them.

With a 14-inch screen and starting weight of 4.7 pounds, the Compaq does not claim to be the ultra-portability, but it works for that many features of much larger notebooks. Chief among them: A full range of Intel Core i7 i5 and even some processors, the Compaq power, ranging from sophisticated to almost brutally it. Consumers also get their pick of Intel integrated graphics or Nvidia NVS 3100.

Our EliteBook 8440p was equipped with a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 5 CPU, an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD, 2GB RAM, 250GB hard drive and accessories such as a fingerprint reader and 2.0-megapixel webcam.

Let it break into military terms: as a business-class ThinkPads from Lenovo “standard issue” with uniform black matte plastic, sparse graphics and thick edges scream, HP’s EliteBook styling is more like the laptop of one officer: simple but not spartan, elegant but not flashy, and absolutely certain. Brushed aluminum cover every inch of the lid and palm rest, but unlike the thin, flexible veneer you can find at an Asus, it feel like lining the interior of a Lexus or Audi. According to HP they are thermally welded to the magnesium subframe, and not just glued or plastic.

Subframe? Exactly. Like the Mini 5101, the EliteBook 8440p is built around a lightweight metal skeleton that gives it strength and durability. If you think HP’s product testers, the 8440p survive repeated drops from 30 inches to 160 degrees heat, dust, humidity, and 300 pounds of weight on the lid, on the off chance a heavyweight boxer errors for a step stool. The keyboard even has a drain in the soil to drink spills away from electronics and funnel through the soil. This is a sensible choice for the design of a machine intended for a lot of table space with the Venti lattes and small airline cups seltzer water and no need to buy software online.

Fancy (and untested, if we ever hope to weather an HP Review Unit) benchmarks aside, it feels the part. The lid opens and closes with the precision of lab equipment, the metal surface exhibit barely a millimeter of flex, and the oversized metal locks that hold him close to feel that they are designed to repel curious by crowbars and screwdrivers. The only weaknesses in this technology fortress appear around the base which appears to be built from vanilla ABS plastic and features some flex around the optical drive and other panels.

The 14.0-inch LCD screen on the Compaq comes in a 1366 x 768 resolution – about average for a screen this size. HP warns the mirror-shine of many of its popular consumer notebooks shine for a matte the EliteBook 8440p model. Although not as bright and lively, it delivers a better overall usability in different situations – from brightly lit offices to park benches, trains and planes. Best of all, it taps all the way back to that tricky little spaces.

HP advertises battery life of up to six hours and 30 minutes from the EliteBook 8440p, but in our tests, we have never seen. Even with mobile mode, we were lucky to the battery extend over four hours, and high performance you are looking at more like three and change. Neither really seems a shame for a machine this powerful, but serious road warriors will want to consider HP’s extended battery for a full day to wring out the 8440p while away from the outlet.

Besides a handful of pre-installed (and unobtrusive) utilities, the EliteBook comes with an exceptionally clean desktop that absolutely no tweaking required from the box. You will not find a single additional icon on the desktop or attached to the bottom bar, and all of HP’s own additions are stored in a folder called HP. We were especially fond of HP’s Power Assistant utility.

In addition to giving accurate estimates of how long you have at some institutions, it makes it easy to untick extras like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth from a central control panel, and you can even see how many watts your laptop is down sucking on a given second time, and how much you can save with different settings. This provides some additional context to each “power plan” – you’ll know that disabling Wi-Fi only saves about one tenth of a watt, for example when jumping from the “mobile” to “high performance” will stretch nearly an additional five. On the battery, the display of the savings in a few minutes for even greater relevance.

Conclusion

In a room filled with dry, plastic-cased design, the EliteBook breaks with a no-nonsense style, quality, features and performance.
