Toshiba NB505-N508 Netbook Review

Toshiba NB505-N508 mini’s is more a variation on the previous mini NB255 netbook than a radical new design. The major change in the netbook is the exterior finish. Toshiba has covered with their new easy grip finish. It consists of wavy surface to give it a bit more grip when it runs in the hand. This may be a bit annoying on the outside look, depending on color, but the standard blue hides it better than their neon green color.

Powering the Toshiba NB505-N508 mini the Intel Atom N455 mobile processor. This combined with 1 GB of DDR2 memory with exactly the same performance as the previous mini NB255. Unlike some other affordable netbooks, memory can be expanded up to 2GB system which increases performance.

The hard disk size of the Toshiba NB505-N508 mini is increased thanks to the new Windows 7 Starter license at software sale. Now comes with a 250GB hard drive for extra storage space compared to previous Windows XP-based netbooks provides.

The screen of the Toshiba NB505-N508 mini is pretty much the typical one found in almost every netbook. It uses the standard 10.1-inch with 1024×600 resolution. It also uses a glossy coating which can make viewing the screen difficult in certain lighting conditions or outdoors. Graphics are powered by the Intel GMA 3150 integrated graphics which is still very limited benefits, including the inability to see, even 720p high definition video streams reliable.

The standard battery pack for the Toshiba NB505-N508 mini is a six cell version. The nice thing is that they a better job of integrating into the netbook that they did not protrude out the back, as in the previous NB255. In video streaming tests, the netbook was able for about five hours and fifteen minutes before they walk in the standby mode. This is an improvement over the previous NB255, but still falls well behind leading models from the likes of ASUS. It should provide sufficient time for most users though.

The keyboard design of the mini NB505-N508 is almost identical to the mini NB255. It would have been nice to see an isolated key layout similar to their more expensive models NB305 only part of the object of the NB505-N508 is to keep costs down. One annoyance is the tiny function keys on the left, including the control, function, window, and Tilda alt keys that can be difficult to use. The trackpad is a nice size and very responsive overall, but the trackpad buttons have shrunk in this version. At least they are still separate toolbar buttons instead of the net in many netbooks and laptops.

Conclusion

Toshiba NB505-N508 mini is essentially a redesign of the previous NB255. He shares many of the same specifications and performance as the previous model, but with a more clean finish. Toshiba has a good job of producing a higher quality feel compared to many other notebook models, but they also charge a slightly high price. Overall, the average netbook, which can win on looks or feels that all personal preference.
